Where We Stand On Islamaphobia

Since the attacks on the World Trade Centre in 2001, there has been a massive shift in the way that all Muslim people have been portrayed by many politicians and the media generally, not only in the USA, but across the world.

Encouraged by this mainstream anti-Muslim mind-set, the far-right in this country has felt confident enough, not only to embrace Islamaphobia, but to make it their sole reason to organise.

The English Defence League (EDL) was formed in 2009 with the pretence that it was simply against Islamic extremism. Over the last 3 years we have seen many examples of this group of racist thugs showing their real intent, including attacks on mosques, assaults on individuals and attempts to make alliances with other fascist anti-Muslim groups across Europe. Chants of “Burn a mosque” and “Allah is a paedo” are often heard at EDL demonstrations. In October this year, 53 EDL thugs were arrested on their way to East London to attack a mosque.

The EDL have shamelessly attempted to hijack some recent, high-profile cases of sex abuse in order to capitalise on the media headlines and make them into racist and specifically anti-Muslim issues.

Islamaphobia is just another crude and ignorant form of racism which Unite Against Fascism believes should be opposed at every opportunity through the committed actions of as broad a group of people as possible.
